Geoscientist Lloyd DeKay Presents:
"Geology of The Columbia River Gorge"
The current stunning beauty of the Columbia River Gorge region belies its tumultuous geologic history. That history spans about 50 million years of volcanic arc eruptions, massive fissure eruptions of flood basalts, more arc volcanism, catastrophic sediment-saturated Ice Age Floods, huge landslides and massive earthquakes. We will trace over 18 million years of that tumultuous geologic history with emphasis on the several catastrophic Ice Age Floods that developed some of the geologic wonders and beauty we marvel at today.
Lloyd DeKay has Master's degree in Geological Oceanography, and had a 27 year career in international oil exploration for Gulf/Chevron. In 2007 he retired to the Columbia River Gorge where he has done geologic investigations for siting the Bonneville Dam Second Powerhouse in 1976 and visited often afterward. He is the President of the Columbia Gorge Chapter.
