Dr. Scott Burns:

The Terroir of Wine in the Pacific Northwest & its Relationship to The Ice Age Floods

When people talk about the factors that make great wine, we think of location, elevation, weather patterns, drainage and certainly the soil. Dirt matters – just ask Dr. Scott Burns,

He knows why Oregon produces great wine and it has to do with the soil in the Willamette Valley and the forces that created it. He will discuss how wine flavors are affected differently in Oregon and Washington related to the flood deposits.

Dr. Burns is also a wine buff consulting with Oregon wine growers about their own pieces of property and what is exactly down below the surface. He tells us grapes don’t necessarily make great wine if grown in too fertile a soil, so paradoxically growers stress their vines by planting on hillsides and dry farming.
